Terry Ryan Stepping Down

Published: Sep 13, 2007 1:26 PM

What did it take to bring me back from my stint of inactivity? First, I finally have internet hooked up at home again after recently moving, but most importantly Terry Ryan has dropped a bit of a surprise by deciding to step down as General Manager of the Minnesota Twins.

Twins Win, Ortiz traded

I sort of feel like I'm living in Bizarro World with the Twins offense managing 17 runs in a 2-game span and the recent news of Ramon Ortiz being traded to the Rockies (I'll post a link when I find one Denver Post, MLB.com: Rockies add veteran pitcher Ortiz).

Shut out...again

Paul Byrd handed the Twins their 10th shutout of the season and 5th since July 1st. The offense scattered 4 hits with the low point coming in the third when Jason Kubel led off with a double and Brian Buscher, Nick Punto and Jason Tyner all failed to bring him in.

So you're saying there's a chance?

The Twins' 1-0 victory on Sunday over Cleveland put them within 4 1/2 games of the Indians for the AL Central lead and within 4 games of Wild Card leading Detroit. It's the closest they've found themselves to the lead since May and Sports Club Stats gives them an 11.4 14.6% chance of making the playoffs.

Yesterday I gave a rundown or the Twins hitters for opening day, today it's a chance to look at the pitchers that will make up the rotation and the bullpen.

2006 Awards

It's pretty impressive that the Twins have people in the running for virtually every big award this season. Two of them are official or very probable:

Worst to best isn't easy

On Sunday the Twins completed a four game sweep over baseball's worst team, and it probably came at a time when that team was playing even worse than it usually does. On Monday the Twins had to play baseball's best team in Detroit where they're 0 and 6. Nothing came easily for the Twins on Monday night. Jason Bartlett, who was 5-5 on Sunday, was 0-3 on Monday and hit into two double plays. A team that got 22 hits just a day before, had just 8 hits on Monday. They also only got the aid of one walk in the game. To make matters worse, Francisco Liriano was roughed up and lasted just four innings.

Kyle Lohse traded

You have to wonder if Wayne Krivsky, GM of the Reds is still secretly working for the Twins. I'm not sure what big moves he was involved in when he was with the Twins, but he's definitely done some good work for the Twins since leaving this past offseason.

Keys to the second half

Published: Jul 12, 2006 11:09 PM

The second half of the baseball season is about to begin and the trade deadline is inching closer and closer. With no baseball on Thursday to talk about, now is a good time look ahead at the keys to the second half for the Twins. In early June it looked as if the primary goal of the second half would be planning for 2007. After a hot month of June that's being called into question and it will leave GM Terry Ryan with some tough choices to make.

Twins 8, White Sox 4

Through the first 4 1/2 innings of Saturday night's game Brad Radke worked the Twins into a 0-4 deficit and the bats remained largely silent against Javier Vasquez. Radke pitched a quick 1st inning but allowed 1 run in each the 2nd and 3rd innings. Radke gave up 2 more runs in the 5th making the expected outcome of the game look pretty bleak.
