For Better or Worse: 2009 Twins

Published: Apr 05, 2009 11:39 AM

The Twins came just shy of the postseason last year, however made very little moves in the offseason to make the team better. It's clear that they're counting on growth from within to make this team contend in 2009.

Looking to improve this year.

photo Michael Cuddyer struggled through injuries last season. While he was rehabbing a hand injury, he was struck by a ball and broke his foot. The string of bad luck limited him to just 279 plate appearances, hafter surpassing 600 in each of the previous two years.

The 2009 Minnesota Twins

Compared to last season, not a lot changed for the Twins this past winter. Last offseason saw the loss of Johan Santana and Torii Hunter as well as a trade that sent Matt Garza and Jason Bartlett to the Tampa Bay Rays for Delmon Young and Brendan Harris. This offseason's biggest move was the signing of Joe Crede, who comes into the season still trying to shake off any doubt about his health.

Let's take a position-by-position look at where the Twins stand in 2009 compared to 2008.

Late lead slips away

The Twins seemed on their way to handing the Tigers their 11th loss of the young season before the Tigers broke out for 11 runs in their final three innings at the plate to defeat the Twins by a score of 11-9.

One decision remains...

...and that will be decided with Francisco Liriano's start today against Pittsburgh. If he looks sharp he'll likely get the final spot in the rotation. If not, he'll start the season in AAA getting in a little more preparation after returning from Tommy John surgery and getting a late start to the spring with visa issues.

2008 Projections: Philip Humber

Continuing on with the 2008 projection series, we now reach Philip Humber. He's the 6th pitcher I'm covering, which doesn't necessarily mean he won't make the starting rotation. He is fighting for that fifth spot along with a couple other guys.

2008 Projection: Francisco Liriano

This is a continuation of the 2008 player projections series. We're currently working through the pitchers and today we find ourselves looking at Francisco Liriano who is working his way back onto the Twins roster after missing all of 2007 rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

Twins play a game

The Twins played their first game of the spring, facing off against the Concordia College Golden Bears. It more more or less a fun competition in which Rick Stelmaszek was the home plate umpire and Ron Gardenhire umpired first base.

Liriano will have surgery

Published: Nov 04, 2006 10:10 AM

Francisco Liriano has decided to undergo Tommy John surgery after months of questioning whether strength training was an effective option. Liriano will have the procedure done on Monday and will then immediately begin on what's expected to be 18 months of rehab. The chances of him returning during 2007 is virtually zero and even when he returns in 2008 there may be questions marks as to how effective he will be.
